Bicycles are very common in Amsterdam. There are special bicycle-parkings for up to 10.000 (!!) bicycles. As a pedestrian, you'll have to pay a lot of attention when crossing raods, for not to be hit by bicycles. A tour guide told us that Amsterdam counts an average of 1.5 biclycles per inhabitant, just to show the proportions !
And it must be said that the bicylcle really is most convenient locomotion for this city, as the landscape is flat, there are special bicycle tracks on almost every street, and there are only few parking spaces available for cars ( at least in the city center ).
